Winter 2006

Message from Kathy

Seasons Greetings from MBF!

Having just celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with an extended family of 20, I reflected on the many things I have to be thankful for.  Traditionally, each member of the family takes a turn at the dinner table to give thanks.  Besides my amazing family, I am thankful for you!  We can only meet our clients' needs because of you and for that we are so grateful.

And now Christmas is in the air!  I love the Christmas music, smells, decorations and especially the gift of giving.  I can't wait for the day after Thanksgiving each year to begin putting up holiday lights, pulling out boxes of special keepsakes, and gathering as a family to hang ornaments on the tree.

You'll find many helpful holiday ideas, solutions and updates in this winter newsletter.

Enjoy your holidays and Happy New Year from MBF!

Sincerely Yours,

Kathy Dupuy, President

Ask the Expert

By Tiffany Keeton, Nanny Manager and Nanny Network Organizer

Q:  “Welcome to the holidays! This time of year can be so fun and so stressful at the same time. Holiday craft ideas are one of the things that we Nannies talk about in our circles every year. 'What are you doing? No! What are YOU doing?"

A: It’s usually around the second week of November that my employer also starts asking me what the kids are going to make for their grandparents for Christmas gifts! This year I came prepared! Below you will find some great ideas for parents, teachers, grandparents and all of the other special people in your charges’ lives. Make sure you get one for yourself, too!!

These first three are all very similar. Do you want it to smell yummy and for your charge to have eaten half of the dough before he gets any into the oven? No? Then use the salt dough. One bite and he won’t eat it again! (If your kids will stay out of the dough you can use the cinnamon/applesauce recipe!)

Scented Ornaments

Stamped Ornaments
http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10671

Salt Dough Ornaments (2 recipes plus scented recipe, too) (great for any age! Use a cookie cutter for the shape and then let the child paint it when it’s cool. Put fun ribbon through the hole in the top.)

Oven Mitts and fabric markers (also good for teachers)
http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10350

No-Sew Fleece Pillow (older kids and good for teacher gift)
http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10350

Star shaped wire ornament (can use any shape – older kids)
http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10116

Cool Card idea (whole family project – you facilitate so all they have to do is create their ONE crafty little rectangle)
http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/feature/famf109cards/famf109cards3.html

Handprint wreath (Take this one step further! Make the handprints out of acid-free white paper and let your charge paint the wreath green after helping you glue all the hands onto the shape. While the paint is still wet, have your charge sprinkle clear glitter all over. It is so sparkly when dry and won’t fade as much as green construction paper! Be sure to laminate it after writing names and dates for years of memories! I have done this with an 18-month-old!

Keep up the good work!

MBF Superstars

Permanent Nanny of the Year
Brittany
Brittany received MBF's 2006 Nanny of the Year award after receiving a nomination from her employer. Brittany found the special connection she was searching for with the Young family, and her intuitiveness and thoughtfulness are just two of the qualities they see every day in Brittany. She goes beyond the call of duty and makes certain that her work allows her employer to spend more time with her children. While Ms. Young was in Tokyo, Brittany even sent her pictures of her three young sons so she would know what was going on in their lives. Not only is Brittany an incredible nanny, but she also worked well with MBF during the placement process with her open communication and honesty.
Temporary Nanny of the Year
Kathleen

With over eight years of nanny experience under her belt, Kathleen came to MBF in 2005 searching for additional nanny work. She receives fantastic reviews from several families due to her genuine interest in children's care. She reads, goes for walks, and explores the outdoors with her charges. The only complaint we receive about Kathleen is that she is not available on a permanent basis! Kathleen has been a permanent nanny for the same MBF family for 10 years! Kathleen's engaging, hands-on caregiving, particulary how much she reads to the children in her care, has earned Kathleen MBF's 2006 Temporary Nanny of the Year award.

Babyproofing Your Marriage
On Sale: January 23, 2007
Publisher: Harper Collins
Website: www.babyproofingyourmarriage.com
Authors: Stacie Cockrell, Cathy O'Neill and Julia Stone

“Am I supposed to gush over what a fine job he did emptying the dishwasher?  What does he want, a gold star?”  - Leslie, married 8 years, 3 kids

“How did my wife react to becoming a mother? I can sum it up in one sentence: ;Honey, I forgot about you.'” - George, married 13 years, 2 kids

No one wants to say it, but everyone knows it’s true:  having babies and parenting small children can be pretty tough on a marriage.  Are you and your spouse enduring the inevitable challenges of early parenthood?  Do you see things differently now that you have kids?  Do you think you’re the only ones going through it?  Then Babyproofing Your Marriage is the book for you.

Three wives, mothers and friends, Stacie Cockrell, Cathy O’Neill and Julia Stone have written a funny, thought-provoking, no-holds barred account of the impact parenthood has on marriage.  Fueled by their own first-hand experiences and conversations with hundreds of men and women, the authors reveal that the struggle to balance marriage and family is nearly universal.  Everyone is going through the same thing.  With candor and empathy, Babyproofing Your Marriage explores both sides of the post-baby relationship divide, and offers simple but effective ways husbands and wives can bridge the gap and reconnect with one another -- so that having children doesn’t mean sacrificing being a couple. Be sure to watch their TV appearances on January 23rd on the NBC Today Show and January 24th on Fox & Friends and ABC News Now.
