Texas and Colorado Summer Family Travel: Activities and a Sitter!

Planning some travel before school starts? It’s a quick drive or flight to cities across Texas when you need a family trip! The Colorado mountains also offer a beautiful change in scenery and weather for a summer visit. We have put together quick highlights of family activities in the 7 cities we service in Texas and Colorado.   • Zilker Park: Cool off for a swim in Barton Springs, a large natural springs that stays about 70 degrees year round! You can also visit the playground, ride the Zilker Zephyr train, and catch free music, concerts or plays. Check local listings for schedules. A quick walk also gets you to the Austin Nature and Science Center, Zilker Botanical Gardens, and plenty of local eateries.
  • Hike & Bike Trail: In addition to walking, running and riding around Lady Bird lake, you can also rent kayaks, canoes, hydrobikes, and stand-up paddle boards.
  • Austin Children’s Museum: This interactive museum is geared towards younger children, and is a great place to stay cool, or spend a rainy day.
  • Politics and History: Explore Texas history at the State Capitol, LBJ Library and Museum, or the Bob Bullock History Museum (including an IMAX theater).
  • Bat Colony: Watch the 1.5 million bats take their nightly flight from under the Congress Avenue bridge at Lady Bird Lake (AKA Town Lake). Children and adults will be fascinated as they take flight at dusk. Set up blankets and picnics for the nightly viewing at no charge! (mid-March through early November)
  • Special Events: Austin has become a hub for conferences, events and festivals. Two great places to look for events are austin360.com and do512.com.
  • Food: Austin has a hopping food trailer scene, so don’t be afraid to sample the local fare!

  • Theme Parks: Six Flags over Texas and the adjacent Hurricane Harbor Waterpark are Dallas favorite, as well as Grapevine’s Great Wolf Lodge Water Park Resort and LEGOLAND Discover Center.
  • Attractions: For fun and educational attractions, visit the Dallas Zoo or the Dallas World Aquarium.
  • Fair Park: Home of the State Fair of Texas, this location also houses the Fair Park Dallas Aquarium, the Natural History Museum, the Railroad Museum, the Science Place (including an IMAX theater), the Women’s Museum and the African American Museum.
  • Sporting Events: Dallas has no shortage of sporting events – from pro to semi-pro. Check local listings for your favorite sport, including the Texas Rangers and the Frisco RoughRiders baseball teams!
  • Medieval Times: Kids love stepping back in time to watch knights battle in a jousting tournament as your family eats dinner.

Vail/Beaver Creek

  • Vail Mountain: Take a scenic gondola ride to the top of Vail Mountain and enjoy horseback riding, a climbing wall or a rebound trampoline (with big bungee cords) at Adventure Ridge.
  • Arts: Enjoy concerts, plays & dance performances at the Vilar Theatre & Gerald R. Ford Amphitheatre. Additionally, the city offers free Thursday night concerts at Solaris, The Arrabelle at Vail Square or in Golden Peak (check the location weekly).
  • Adventure: In just a short distance, you can enjoy whitewater rafting, zip lining, biking, fishing, hiking, or jeep tours – so much fun!
  • Education: The Vail Nature Center, Walking Mountains Science Center, The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, and the Colorado Ski Museum Hall of Fame all provide interesting and educational opportunities for your family.
