The Benefits of Kindness

As we come upon this season of Thanksgiving, Mom’s Best Friend is contemplating some creative ways to show gratitude and make a positive impact in our communities. It has been proven that serving others is emotionally, mentally and physically beneficial – it’s a win-win situation! Below are several great ways that you and your family can serve others during this season of thanks.

  • Prepare kits of needed items to keep in your car and give to the homeless. These kits could include much needed items, such as: socks, nutrition bars, fruits with peel (apple, orange), toothbrush/paste, soap, water and an encouraging note.
  • Make treats for the local fire department or police station.
  • Visit a home for the elderly such as The Collinfield House in Austin or Lakeview at Josey Ranch in the north Dallas area. The residents of these homes love visits and companionship! You can play board games or cards, paint the women’s nails, bring an instrument to play, read a book, or just simply spend time listening about their lives.
  • Surprise a neighbor and mow their yard. This is especially helpful for widows or single moms.
  • Think of your favorite teacher or a mentor you had and write them a thank you card.  Put a stamp on it and send it snail mail!
  • Visit a pet shelter and give the dogs and cats some attention.
  • Sponsor a child in a different country.  This helps provide education to a child that normally wouldn’t be able to access or afford it. Your child will also learn about other cultures through having a pen pal!  Mom’s Best Friend supports Africa New Life by sponsoring a home for orphaned street boys. These children are given the opportunity to live in the home and attend school or trade school. Many of our staff members sponsor individual children, as well.
  • Have an apple cider stand and raise money for your favorite cause.
  • Plant a tree, flowers or a garden. Share the fruits of what you grow with others.
  • Gather a group of family and friends and donate your time to a local holiday event benefiting an organization that supports children and families. Mom’s Best Friend Dallas will be supporting the Rainbow Days Saturday with Santa event on December 12, for children and parents residing in one of 27 local domestic violence, homeless, transitional living and permanent supportive housing centers throughout DFW. There are many worthy organizations and events like this across Texas!
  • Invite someone over for the holidays.  Have an elderly neighbor that can’t travel to see family, or know a college kid that can’t go home?  Have them share the holidays with your family!

We hope that whatever you do this season, you have an opportunity to share love and gratitude with those put in your path. Happy Thanksgiving!
