We hear a number of reasons why families decide to search for a new nanny – sometimes they hired on their own and neglected to set expectations up front, sometimes it’s been a few years and your needs (or your children’s needs) have changed, and sometimes the relationship has simply run its course. Whatever reason it may be, the goal when ending a relationship is to be professional until the very end. Here is a guide:
- Notice: The typical amount of notice is 2 weeks, but be sure to refer to your employment agreement (if you have one) to check the terms. Be sure that you deliver this news in person, and be compassionate and kind. You’ll want to follow it up with an email as well, and all communication should note the date, the reason for termination, and an appreciation for what your nanny has done for your family. Note: feel free to schedule a time with Kimberly if you want to talk through tactful reasons or any exceptions to the typical notice. Occasionally, families will decide to give notice and pay the severance without having the nanny work for the remainder of the term – that is up to you.
- PTO: The final check should include any unused, accrued vacation/paid time off (PTO).
- Collect items: Gather all keys, car seats, credit cards, garage door openers, and anything else you might have loaned your nanny for the job.
- Letter of Recommendation: Unless there is some exception, you’ll want to provide your nanny with a reference letter that they can use to find their next position.
- Goodbyes: It is important closure for your nanny and child(ren) to say goodbye. You’ll want to focus on the positive, warn your child(ren) ahead of time, and be sure that your nanny understands how much you have appreciated having her.
